How I came to know about this book:

Abhishek Sinha's book came out around the same time as mine, and we had a great chat about the excitement of our releases and what the future holds. Since I'm a fan of thrillers, I decided to give his book a read.

What the book is about :

"By Hook or By Crook," penned by Sinha, follows an intriguing plotline where a civilian steps into the shoes of a detective when his brother goes missing, adding a unique twist to the conventional detective story. The storyline, with its unexpected turns and the protagonist's unconventional journey into the world of investigation, was engaging.

What I have loved about the book :

The initial premise of a missing person and the subsequent unravelling of a larger conspiracy within the city provided a solid foundation for the narrative. The story grips you from the start and keeps you hooked till last. It's a whodunit type of mystery where the reveal is left for the climax to keep the readers glued and SInha has successfully done that.

What I felt could have been better :

However, as the story delved deeper, the plot seemed to lose some of its momentum. The build-up to the climax felt a bit dragged and overdramatic, leaving the reader expecting a grand revelation involving big rackets and prominent underworld players. Unfortunately, the resolution did not meet these heightened expectations.

One unusual choice made by the author is naming the city in the story simply as "city." While this could be a deliberate decision to create a universal setting, it might leave some readers yearning for a more vivid and specific backdrop. Also, the similarity in the names of the two brothers, Sajid and Shahid, brought to my mind the classic duo Thomson and Thompson. While this may have been intentional, it could be confusing for readers and distract from the narrative.

Why one should read or not read this book:

It's challenging to discuss a thriller without revealing spoilers, but suffice it to say that the twists and turns in the story are sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats. Sinha effectively maintains the suspense throughout the novel, making it a page-turner. Overall, a worthwhile read for fans of the thriller genre.

The main characters in this story had an almost similar name which added to my confusion. However, in certain stories having names, I do not find it confusing. Have you read any such book where character names are almost similar? Let me know your take on this in the comments.
