How I came to know about this book:
Haimanti Bagchi had organised an online Q&A session and I won this book as a giveaway gift there. I still remember vividly that she had wrapped the book in such cute wrapping paper for me.
What the book is about :
Haimanti in Bengali means 'Autumn'. Haimanti Bagchi's "Autumn of Life" unfolds as a beautifully poignant reflection of the author's emotional journey, aptly named after her own connection to the season of autumn, as implied by her name. The book, like the season, captures the essence of life's transitions and emotions through the poetries tucked under four headings.
What I have loved about the book :
The author, with a skilled hand, takes readers on a nostalgic trip down memory lane, offering vivid and heartfelt descriptions of her childhood days. Her ability to paint a detailed and emotive picture allows readers to immerse themselves in the landscape of her youth. What stands out in this collection is the touching tribute to her late mother. Bagchi's fond recollections add a layer of profound emotion to the poems, creating a connection that resonates with readers who have experienced similar loss.
Beyond the personal, "Autumn of Life" does not shy away from addressing relevant social issues. Bagchi courageously sheds light on topics like domestic abuse and the suppression of women, exposing the societal norms that often hide behind the institution of marriage. The poems serve as a vehicle for raising awareness and fostering understanding of these pertinent issues.
What I felt could have been better :
The book felt more like a collection of her personal memories and emotions, and it would have been better left that way. The inclusion of poems under the "abuse" category seemed forced as if added just to keep the theme topical.
Why one should read or not read this book:
The strength of this collection lies in its ability to weave words that go straight to the heart. Bagchi's poetry is not just a literary expression but a profound exploration of the human experience. The verses are imbued with sincerity and authenticity, making them relatable and impactful.
"Autumn of Life" invites readers to unwind, offering solace and reflection. Bagchi's collection is not just a book of poems; it's a companion that resonates with the reader, making it a meaningful addition to anyone seeking a thoughtful and emotive literary experience.
