How I came to know about this book:
Debojyoti Gupta hails from the Northeast (Tripura), and since I’m also from the same region, we connected. When he shared details about his book, I decided to give it a read.
What the book is about :
Debojyoti Gupta takes readers on a poignant journey through the life of Marshall, the protagonist, as he grapples with love and loss in the backdrop of Tripura and Calcutta University. The story unfolds as a melancholic romantic tale, capturing Marshall's odyssey through the complexities of life and the intricacies of love.
What I have loved about the book :
Gupta's writing style is accessible and conversational, making the book easy and relatable in nature. The narrative skillfully weaves together sociological and psychological elements, offering readers a glimpse into the gaps that emerge as we age, and the wistful reflections on younger years. The story is presented as a romantic tragedy, adding an emotional layer that resonates with the human experience.
One notable aspect of the book is the author's approach to character development and psycho-social analysis. While the narrative may lack some of the polished nuances found in more mature works, the book compensates with its genuine portrayal of human emotions. This authenticity allows readers to connect with the character on a personal level, as he navigates the highs and lows of his romantic journey.
What I felt could have been better :
There are a whole lot of typos throughout the narrative, which, while distracting, can be attributed to the normal challenges of the editing process. There is a problem in maintaining continuity in names, places and other things throughout the book which may create confusion. Also, the names used for the characters seem like unusual choices for the setting used in the story. It is hoped that these minor issues will be addressed in subsequent editions by the publishers, allowing the story to shine without such distractions.
Why one should read or not read this book:
"The Rain in Winter" is a compelling read for those who appreciate a heartfelt exploration of love and life's complexities. Gupta's novel is a promising start, and one looks forward to seeing how his storytelling evolves in future literary endeavours.
