How I came to know about this book:

Manali and I had a plan to do a podcast episode together about books. Though it did not finally materialise, I thought of picking up her book and giving it a read.

What the book is about :

"Heartstrings and Harmonies" by Manali Desai is a collection of 29 short stories, each cleverly woven around a familiar Hindi Bollywood song.

What I have loved about the book :

The idea of incorporating well-known songs into the stories adds a nostalgic and delightful touch, making the book appealing to fans of both music and fiction. The stories are short and sweet, primarily focussing on themes of love and family ties. The simplicity of the topics makes for an easy read.

What I felt could have been better :

The large number of stories revolving around similar themes may feel repetitive. One of the main drawbacks of the book is the lack of time to connect with the characters. Since the stories are brief and the affairs mundane, you don’t get the chance to build a deeper relationship with them, which makes it easy to forget their individual arcs. As a result, it becomes a bit of a "read-and-forget" experience when moving from one story to the next. If the book had focused on a single family or combined several stories together, it could have created a stronger emotional impact.

Why one should read or not read this book:

"Heartstrings and Harmonies" is a decent read for anyone looking for short, uncomplicated stories that are easy to enjoy without much emotional investment. It's perfect for a quick and lighthearted literary escape.
