How I came to know about this book:
The author is represented by The book bakers, the same agency that represent me. I saw his book advertisement on a common Whatsapp group and decided to do some horror reading.
What the book is about :
'Legends of the Dark' by Souvik Chakraborty is a collection of eight horror stories inspired by some of the world's most enduring urban legends and folklore figures. From Bloody Mary and the Boogeyman to creepy clowns and the legendary Ness, the book gathers familiar names from the darker corners of popular imagination and places them within entirely new narratives.
One thing readers should know before diving in is that this is not a collection that explores the origins of these legends. If you are looking for the history behind Bloody Mary or the folklore surrounding the Loch Ness Monster, you may be disappointed. Instead, Chakraborty uses these iconic figures as building blocks for original stories, creating narratives that involve the legends rather than retelling them.
What I have loved about the book :
What I appreciated most about the collection is its approach to horror. These stories are not designed around jump scares or shock value. The horror emerges gradually, woven into the fabric of otherwise straightforward narratives. The emphasis remains on storytelling, with the supernatural elements enhancing the atmosphere rather than overwhelming it. This makes the collection accessible even to readers who are not avid horror fans.
Among all the stories, Bloody Mary stood out as my personal favorite. More than a ghost story, it explores the friendship between two girls whose relationship becomes complicated when they find themselves in love with the same boy. The emotional tension adds depth to the horror, making it one of the more memorable entries in the collection.
What I felt could have been better:
The writing is simple and easy to follow, which I believe is both the book's strength and limitation. On one hand, the stories are quick and engaging, making the collection an effortless read. On the other hand, the simplicity means that the narratives rarely linger in the mind after they are finished. I enjoyed reading them in the moment, but I did not find myself revisiting their themes or pondering their endings afterward.
For this reason, the book feels particularly suited to younger readers or those who are new to the horror genre. The stories carry enough suspense to entertain without becoming too dark, complex, or psychologically disturbing. Experienced horror readers looking for layered narratives or lingering dread may find the collection a little too straightforward.
Why one should read or not read this book:
'Legends of the Dark' is a pleasant, one-time read that offers familiar legends wrapped in accessible storytelling. It may not leave you sleeping with the lights on, nor will it haunt your thoughts for days, but it provides a few enjoyable chills along the way. If you're a young reader, a newcomer to horror, or simply someone who enjoys light supernatural fiction, this collection is worth picking up for an evening of easy, spooky entertainment.
